The Royal Foundation supports Shout launching in the UK

10/05/2019

Today, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced the launch of Shout.
After three years of research, planning and an investment of £3 million, The Royal Foundation is delighted to see the launch of Shout. This is the biggest initiative The Royal Foundation has incubated to date and has led to the setting up of the first charity dedicated to digital innovation to support mental health – Mental Health Innovations.

Shout is one of the UK’s most innovative and pioneering digital mental health support services, making it easier for people in crisis to get help. It is a text messaging service for people in crisis – free to use, confidential and available 24/7.

The tides are turning, and people are starting to feel more comfortable talking about their mental health, but better tools are needed to help people start a conversation wherever they are, and whenever they need to talk. Powered by hundreds of trained volunteers across the UK, the text line takes people from a moment of crisis to a calm and safe place, where they feel listened to, supported and empowered to take steps to keep themselves safe.

As texting is private and silent, it opens up a whole new way to find help. I am incredibly excited to be launching this service, knowing it has the potential to reach thousands of vulnerable people every day.” – The Duke of Cambridge, speaking about the launch of shout.

The pilot of the service launched in May 2018 with a partnership with Heads Together charity partner, The Mix. Shout now works with 12 partners, has recruited a cohort of 1000 volunteers across the country. “Some of my most rewarding moments on the platform involve texters slowly opening up after building trust with them & getting thanked by texters for being there for them at a time when no one else was.” – Mathew, Shout Volunteer
